About Paul Zhen
Artist. Storyteller. Creator.
Photography is only the final step. The real work begins long before the shutter is pressed.
Through his photographic work, Paul Zhen explores the emotional spaces people occupy when they are alone and when they are together—moments of longing, reflection, uncertainty, resilience, love, conflict, and transformation. He is interested in the human being beneath each story and the emotions that remain timeless across cultures and generations. Through the creative process, he seeks to better understand both others and himself.
Paul approaches each project as a visual production, combining location scouting, set design, wardrobe, lighting, and narrative development to create images that feel cinematic, timeless, and resonant.
Drawing inspiration from classical painting, fashion, theater, and film, his work explores themes of beauty, power, mystery, and change. Whether working in a Venetian palace, a historic theater, or an abandoned industrial space, he creates photographs that blur the boundary between photography, painting, and cinema. His goal is not simply to document a scene, but to create images that invite viewers to pause, wonder, and imagine the story beyond the frame.
After nearly four decades leading large organizations, Paul now devotes his time to creating fine art photography and visual storytelling projects primarily throughout Europe and the United States. His professional experience in developing high performance teams continues to influence his artistic process, where complex productions, collaborative teams, and meticulous planning come together in pursuit of a single image.
Paul's photographs have been exhibited internationally and are held in private collections around the world.
From Concept to Photograph
Every image begins with a concept based on a source of inspiration like a location, clothing, or story that leads to the development of a storyboard. To achieve the vision, locations are scouted and a highly competent team is assembled. Many make up artists, hair stylists, models and other creatives have worked around the world with Paul in the past ensuring the quality and consistency of images is assured. Sometimes planning can take months until all the details are worked out.
Once on location, Paul collaborates with the team to take advantage of the many talents available. Under his leadership, a concept for a specific image is developed. After the team members work their magic, Paul sets the lights, directs the models, and captures the image.
Paul finishes all of his work on his own to ensure the mood, color, detail and story are perfect. He enjoys mixing old master painting approaches with modern technological solutions to bring the vision to life. His favorite painter is Caravaggio from which Paul draws inspiration for chiaroscuro, drama, and storytelling.
